Even though the appeal of marriage is declining for many reasons as stated here, there is no gainsaying that some people still want to walk that route. The only difference now is that they tread cautiously.
Choosing a life partner, or seeking a committed romantic relationship is one this generation cannot toy with. Many people have had their lives shattered because of marriage and entanglement in disastrous relationships.
Men often find themselves facing one of the most pivotal decisions of their lives when it comes to living with a woman. Physical attraction may spark initial interest, but the qualities that make a woman truly stand out in a man’s heart go far deeper.
When a man wants to consider commitment and building a life together with a woman, they increasingly seek qualities that promise lasting happiness, stability, and shared growth. But what are these qualities, and why do they hold such significance?
In a recent survey, married men were asked to share what they would advise younger men to seek in a potential spouse. Their responses revealed insights beyond the typical checkboxes and uncovered qualities that carry a deep, personal impact.
Many of these though are based on their biases imposed on them by their positive or negative experiences. These men, having experienced the challenges and joys of married life firsthand, highlighted the traits that they now know truly matter.
For many, the right partner is more than a companion; she is someone who inspires, supports, and grows with them in ways they might not have fully understood before marriage.
In this new age, relationships can be a challenging route, and both men and women are often bombarded with endless advice on what they should or shouldn’t be looking for in a partner.
However, hearing directly from men who have already made that leap will help you know what’s going on in the inner room, or like we say in our local parlance, the other room.
This poll offers a practical perspective grounded in real experiences.
These married men didn’t just speak about qualities they admired but also that which they saw as red flags, some were weird though, while others were filled with regrets.
As you read through their advice, I encourage you to see it as a lesson that is worth reflecting on. Then you can gauge how these qualities resonate with your own values and hopes for a relationship.
Whether you’re single, dating, or thinking about taking the next step with someone special, understanding these qualities can help you choose a partner who aligns with your priorities.
Choosing a life partner is about more than filling in a list of traits. It’s about finding a person who fits into the bigger picture of your life—someone who will be by your side through the highs and lows, helping you become the best version of yourself along the way.
These people are real people, I can assure you that. I left their names in these screenshots to show you that these opinions were from real people. They are on social media. You can search for them on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
So, stay with me as I reveal these screenshots that dig into the heart of what men look for in the women they want to settle down with.
Top Advice Married Men Give For A Life Partner: As Revealed By Real Men.
1. Career

While it appears that many out there feel that a highly educated woman would not make a good wife, you can see that sometimes the generalization of things is what makes people go into oblivion. A good career would always be a top quality for any woman any time, any day. It’s not about the beauty alone, the brain matters too. But if you have Beauty and Brain, you are good to go.
2. A Kind-Hearted Woman

Kindness is an age-long virtue that can never fade away. Many men out there cherish the kindness in the heart of a woman above every other thing. While career and education are good, this reaction says her beauty and shape will not raise the children, her kind and nurturing heart will. These are very important to men.
3. Co-habit Before Marriage

While this may not resonate with many religious teachings, especially the Christian religion, some men will never get into marriage in this new age without living with you first. The fears of the abrupt end of many marriages have led men to advise younger ones to test the waters first. Some will tell you: never to put your two legs into the water when you are testing the depth. As we said earlier, these screenshots are from real people, probably married, sharing their advice with younger unmarried men.
4. Marry A Woman That Loves You And Not The Other Way

I call this one Awkward Love because one is supposed to be shared but would I blame him? NO. The way men process love is completely different from that of women. In fact, I wrote here that men love differently.
The writer shared the advice of his father. What does this tell you? It is advice that has passed through TWO FILIAL GENERATIONS.
The advice claimed that men easily learn how to love but if a woman doesn’t love you, she may never be able to. This is a profound revelation and that which must be tested.
But, who will bell the cat? One tried it and he got burnt. As you can see, he speaks from a point of regret.
5. Never Marry A Baby Mama………LOL

Single parenting has become a thing in this new age. It has come to stay and will remain for as long as the world exists. Yet, we have men advising that younger men stay away from Single mothers, otherwise known as Baby mamas. How relevant is this piece of advice?
We may never be able to answer that question here but here is someone issuing a stern warning about the dangers of getting married to single mothers. As I said before, the advice from many of these people is laden with biases coming from their positive or negative experiences.
It doesn’t mean they are rules, yet, they remain pieces of advice in their own rights. It even added….No matter how much you love her…LOL.
6. Never Marry A Woman Who Doesn’t Speak Well About Her Dad…

We had many cases of fathers abusing their children, especially their daughters. There are also cases of a mother doing the same to their Sons. It’s a terrible world. The experiences of life are what we carry about and if one hasn’t healed, the probability of passing this experience to everyone is sure.
A lady who experienced abuse from her father would not likely speak well about her dad to anybody. But does that mean she would be a terrible wife/spouse? Maybe Not. But then, who will know what has happened to the writer who shared this advice?
This is why is compulsory for fathers to be responsible for their children. Many of these innocent ones carry this baggage into their relationship life and things get messy there. The writer said, “…chances are high that you won’t be able to please her”. This must come from an assumption that the father was a responsible person but the lady was always asking for more.
So, if her father could not please her, how would you as a spouse? This calls for deep thoughts.
7. Watch The Way Her Mother Treat Her Father…

Like the popular saying, like father like son, like mother like daughter. Men advise that a lady whose mother isn’t treating her father very well will NEVER treat you, her spouse very well. This is also very deep. And if you carefully look at it, you would know that children easily learn from what they see than from what they are told.
May I reiterate that in as much as these pieces of advice seem to coming from seemingly married men, there is no guarantee that they happen all the time, yet, one can never rule out the fact that there are chances.
When a lady is brought up in a home where the father is always ridiculed by the mother, she may lose regard for the gender and feel that’s how to treats all the men in her life.
However, people change as they grow, especially when they begin to see the world in a clearer aspect, yet, we can’t sweep this piece of advice under the carpet. So, I ask: What says thou?
8. Never Marry Out Of Pity

It doesn’t go beyond that- Pity. And that’s all! Pity is that emotional attachment you have toward someone passing through an unbearable condition. Pity invokes the ability in you to assist or help when you have the power or the capability to do so. But, marriage is not “help”. You don’t marry someone because you want to help the person.
No! It doesn’t work that way.

This one is very solid advice, not just for men, but also for women. The person you pity today may become the worst version of their true state when that disadvantaged state has been lifted. So, let pity end in the place of rendering help if you can.
And like it is added in the screenshot…watch the family you marry from. Everyone seems to be concerned about where their spouse is coming from. Doesn’t that spring something in our minds? We must all ensure to build a good family because tomorrow someone will poke into what the family we are building today appears like.
9. If Your Finance Isn’t Stable, Wait…

This has become the very crux of the matter of marriage. Love may bring two people together, but stable finances help cement it together. With the dwindling economy of the world, a man without a stable financial source shouldn’t get into marriage.
Many who are already into it and suddenly have issues with their finances are passing through hell. You may not believe it, but it is what it is. Money makes marriage sweet. And if you are a man, more would be expected from you. You can hide away from this fact.
You won’t enjoy it…. that sums it up.
10. Marry A Peaceful Woman

This is a very sad one. Imagine having a hectic day, and you get home only to continue where outsiders ended. The home is supposed to be a solace for everyone; man and woman inclusive. It is expected that when the streets are hot and there are tensions at work, one can escape to the home and find peace and love.
A shield from the turbulence on the outside. Alas! The writer of this particular says he sits in the car outside his home for at least ten minutes before coming in. Then, one question comes to mind. Doing what exactly?
Well, maybe rehearsing his lines as to what to say to avoid another round of trouble in the home. When there is no peace in the house for a man, he seeks for that peace outside and this. This leads to a lot of things. This also applies to many women. When the man isn’t giving them the needed peace, they seek peace in the arms of another man leading to infidelity.
These are facts that happen daily. So, fellows out there, marry a peaceful spouse! You DO NOT want World War Three starting in your house.
11. Marry Not A Liability

No one goes into any venture to lose. Marriage is one of the most important ventures anyone can get into. You remember the vow says “For better or worse”, and “since death do us part”. With these vows, it is obvious that the marriage institution is supposed to be one that lasts a long time. But of course, in reality, things have changed and marriages are been brought to an abrupt end these days.
So, when you consider the risk of marrying someone who has nothing to bring to the table, it is a thing of concern if that association can work till death do them part. It is natural that a point, one of the parties would be overstretched and tensions would begin to build up.
So, in essence, this man here says something happened, probably in the negative, in his finances, and then, suddenly he became an object of scorn. This attests to the previous advice that stable finance is tantamount to a better marriage, though it doesn’t guarantee its success.
12. Marry Someone Who Is Prepared For Marriage And Not Wedding

As much as I am holding back from laughing, I can’t deny the fact that this piece of advice is a funny one. You would agree with me that a Wedding lasts for a day but Marriage lasts till death. So, if all you are prepared for is a day’s success and you leave the one that lasts till death, well, it shows the level of your understanding.
Someone with that kind of shallow understanding majors on the minor, and in marriage you don’t think of chances. The real-life begins after the pomp and flair of a wedding ceremony. Many people prepare so much for the wedding ceremony that they leave little for the marriage indeed.
The success of your wedding impresses outsiders, but the success of your marriage is a plus to yourself. So, choose wisely.
13. Marry Early

This seems to be a fading piece of advice because as I wrote here, many people aren’t even interested in doing this anymore, how much more of investing in it very early. Yet, this is coming as a piece of advice. The fact is that when you marry early, you will see everything as an adventure provided you have an open mind to discovering new things.
On the flip side, if you delay for a longer time, you’d be exposed to too much information that could be hazardous to your decision to tie the knot. The more you know, the more skeptical you become. Social media isn’t even helping as people are exposed to an information overload daily.
But as stated in the screenshot, face the trouble with your youthful strength. Use your loaded energy to find the path for your marriage and if the two of you are on the same page, you are good to go. But if you keep it to a later age, you may be overwhelmed because the fun of adventure is no longer there.
14. Marry Your Friend

This is a timeless piece of advice. What we call love is too loaded with misconceptions. Read more about that here. It is easier to be liked and to like than to love and to be loved. In fact, I have often opined that many of the things we call love could be best left at the like stage.
It is also why it is best to invest in quality friendship before taking it deeper. When you marry a friend, you are free in the relationship. Friendship brings out the freedom in everyone, but when you rush into a romantic relationship, there are too many emotional investments.
When you marry someone you can call your friend, you can play around without one person picking offenses that don’t exist. Your words are not misconstrued and you can joke without needing to explain it.
You can even fart in each other presence…LOL.
15. Never Ignore The Red Flags

Life has a way of telling us something will go wrong. It’s our perception of our inner world that determines how we grab and grasp it. When you are in love, you are biased because of your emotional inclinations. That’s why the other point of friendship matters a lot.
Never ignore the red flags. Never!
What you thought you could manage may be one slice of the entire pizza when it becomes full-blown. When you see something you know cannot deal with, speak about it. If you don’t see changes or if it seems it is part of the person, you know what to do.
This is the universe prompting you of the next CTA.
16. Never Marry A Selfish Woman

A man is supposed to look after his wife just as the wife is supposed to reciprocate, but if you discover you give more than you receive or when you don’t receive at all, then, that is something you should look at carefully. Any relationship where one isn’t bothered about the appearance of the other is not a good one.
A man should look good for his woman while the beauty of the woman is also a pride to the man. When this balance is tilted, the relationship will go sour.
Never marry someone who doesn’t want you to look good. Always remember that!
17. Avoid Daughters Whose Parents Live Separately

There is a reason family check is coming up more than once in this series. Everyone seems to be very concerned about the family background of the person they want as a spouse. Yet, you hear outside there that background doesn’t matter. Believe that at your risk.
The influence our family has on us all cannot be overemphasized and when one comes from a place where one of both parents isn’t physically present, life’s lessons become one-sided. When you bring this into marriage, it’s a recipe for disaster.
It’s a dangerous zone.
18. Never Believe You Can Change A Woman

No one can be changed who doesn’t want to be changed because change begins with you. Have you ever wondered why everyone wants to change the world but never wants to change themselves? So, if you can resonate with this, then it should make better sense when we say you can’t change a woman who doesn’t want to change.
Change is constant but when it comes to habits in marriage, it is almost as if that zone defies the rules. Many people have thought “Oh, she will change, we are just dating, when we finally get married, she will adjust”. Bro, listen, what you see is what you have.
We are sorry to break the bubbles, no one truly changes in relationships except when they feel so. And many can pretend to have changed but when the right motivation is brought, you would see that nothing has moved.
Watch out for those illusions of I will change her. I will change him.
In romantic relationships, you can change no one.
19. Figure Out Yourself First

An invaluable one there!
If a sailor doesn’t have a compass, then you are going nowhere. Or let’s say you are lost in the deep. Marriage is like the deep. In the same vein, if you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up in the wrong ship. In this ship called a relation-ship, you must know where you are going.
It is easier to get into the ship that aligns with your destination. Every man must identify himself before bringing someone else into his life. To avoid conflicts, know your values.
You were not created to be compatible with everyone. There are some people you may never be compatible with marriage-wise. This can only be known when you have identified yourself.
Many people are already lost in their marriage. Don’t add to the numbers.
Conclusion
And that’s a wrap. I hope you enjoyed it. As I opined earlier, these are just random views and thoughts on social media, but you can’t throw them all away. There are invaluable lessons to pick from them. They can be applied to both men and women, even though this was directed at men.
If you have additions, I would be happy to read from you in the comments section.
